About me
Hi, welcome to my website. I’m Naresh Kumar, a forward-deployed engineer and fractional CTO, originally from Chennai, India, and living in St. Louis, Missouri now. I grew up with nothing handed to me, which taught me early that you earn everything, including the solution nobody thinks exists.
Over the past twenty years I’ve worked with companies of every size, from Dell, Cerner, Cognizant and VMware to small teams and solo founders. I started out testing software, which taught me to look for what breaks before customers do, and grew into leading testing, projects and releases for teams spread across India, the United States and New Zealand. Along the way I worked in healthcare records, enterprise systems, cloud software and e-commerce.
In 2014 I stepped away from the corporate world and moved to New Zealand. In 2016 I founded Freedom Seat: I ride a tandem bicycle across continents with the back seat empty, and invite strangers to climb on and pedal with me against human trafficking. More than 500 people have, across 34 countries and 30,000+ km, and together we’ve raised $250,000 for prevention, prosecution and the rehabilitation of survivors. A documentary about the journey won the Audience Award at the Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival.
In 2020, stuck in India during COVID, I got a call from race directors whose ultramarathons I had run. Their virtual race across Tennessee had planned for 2,000 runners, and more than 19,600 had signed up. Instead of capping it, I built the whole system myself: registration, tracking every runner on a map, certificates, emails and support. That platform is still running six years later. Alongside it I build and run the platform for Big’s Backyard Ultra, which has grown from one race in a Tennessee backyard to 708 affiliated races in 82 countries.
Today I run my own practice. I work alongside founders, race directors and nonprofits as a forward-deployed engineer and fractional CTO, building and running what they need, hands-on with AI agents. Most of my best work started with a conversation on a trail.
Besides technology, I run ultramarathons and race bikepacking events. At the Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan, I tore a tyre 250 km from the nearest town, booted it with my sailcloth wallet and rode about a hundred miles through the Tian Shan to the finish. I also speak at schools, libraries and conferences about resilience and finishing what you start, and I’ve given more than 50 talks across New Zealand, India and the US.
